Loren Kaplan

COUNTRY : CANADA
Loren Kaplan is a South African ceramic artist who now resides in Toronto, Canada. She has been working with clay since the early 90’s and appreciates the sensation of the medium in shaping its body, creating texture, pattern, space and form. Kaplan’s vessels are about potential – these defined spaces of emptiness that can be filled with something…or nothing.

Kaplan uses both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to create her porcelain and stoneware vessels. Her coil-built vessels, organic in process and form, range from delicate porcelain to intricate botanical carvings and poppy seed capsules. Combining wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques Kaplan also creates white porcelain or large black vessels (black bells) accentuated with texture and patterns.

“The whole purpose of a vessel is that it be filled. But it is in the making of vessels, rather than filling them, that is life’s greatest challenge, and its’ most revolutionary achievement.” Chassidus

Kaplan holds a BA in Fine Arts, photography, studied ceramics at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics, and has received numerous awards for her ceramic art. Her work is featured in the South African Constitutional Court Art Collection.
