S Table

Designed by Marcel Gascoin - Gubi

French designer Marcel Gascoin (1907-1986) was one of
the leading furniture designers of the post-war era. He is
recognized for the vital role he played in the reconstruction
of France after the Second World War, when his pragmatic
modular storage units and matching sets of wooden furniture,
which focused on clean aesthetics and functionality, became
a staple for French households.

The S–Table was originally conceived by Marcel Gascoin
in 1953 for the living quarters of officers and NCOs (noncommissioned
officers) living onsite at the Supreme
Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (‘SHAPE’) in Saint-
Germain-en-Laye and Fontainebleau near Paris. Working
with architects Felix Dumail, Jean Dubuisson, Marcel Lods
and Maurice Cammas, Gascoin realized the pragmatically
conceived table could also have a practical application in
the compact civilian homes being built all over France after
the Second World War. Its innovative extending functionality
and clean lines soon turned it into a household staple – the
same utilitarian characteristics that make it ideal for modern
homes today.
